In the German school system and curriculum, issues of development politics only appear marginally. Visions for Children e.V. has therefore set itself the goal of informing students about global processes, especially in connection with international crises and conflicts. The causes and consequences of crises, the right to education and approaches to solutions in the field of Development Politics are discussed, using Afghanistan as an example. The project includes the optimization of existing teaching materials from the previous domestic project as well as the development of new materials for the lower school level. In addition, further training for teachers is offered. The aim is to sensitize young people at an early stage and to promote their appreciation of education.

Initial situation

Pupils in Germany have too little contact with the topic of development cooperation in school lessons. Current curricula do not sufficiently address the living conditions and effects of crises on regions/states affected by poverty and war.  This makes it difficult for students to see the complex situations involved from different perspectives. Contexts such as the causes and consequences of flight and migration can only be understood with difficulty. Important global issues such as the right and opportunity to a high-quality education are often taken for granted from their own life reality.

Students are also often unaware their own role and Germany’s and responsibility in solving global crises. We believe it is necessary to confront students with issues of Development Politics at an early stage in order to raise their awareness of such topics, to promote their engagement with them, and to open up new perspectives for themselves. In this way, they can question their own roles and responsibilities.

Our solution approach

With our project at schoolsThe target groups of the project are students of upper and middle secondary level 1, as well as students of lower secondary level 1 . For the latter, new teaching materials are being developed that introduce development policy issues at an early stage. Teachers who support the development of the materials or use them are also to be considered as a target group.

The project will involve cooperation with teaching institutes in the respective federal states and dedicated teachers. In addition, an event will be held at the University of Cologne for undergraduate teachers. Together with them, the existing teaching materials from the pilot project will be revised and expanded. This includes the integration of alternative and additional tasks in order to make the materials accessible for middle secondary level 1 as well. In addition, the materials are to be adapted to the educational plans of five additional federal states.

In addition, new teaching materials will be created for grades 5-6, as the existing materials are too demanding for younger students. The new materials are to be flexibly adaptable and extend over 4-6 teaching units of 45 minutes each.

The materials for students are to be accompanied by handouts for teachers that provide suggestions on how to use the educational materials. Furthermore, information events and workshops for teachers will be offered online and at the Hamburg Teacher Institute.

The measures are implemented by the project team in close cooperation with educational specialists and teachers. The aim of the project is to sensitize students to international crises and conflicts at an early stage, to teach them approaches to solutions within the framework of sustainable development cooperation and to raise their awareness of the right to education. The measures selected are intended to have a lasting impact on the knowledge and understanding of the students, so that they can also pass on this knowledge in their surrounding communities.

After completion of the project, the revised and new teaching materials are to be used in schools on a permanent basis in order to continue to sensitize students to the aforementioned topics. It is planned to develop a long-term implementation strategy to ensure that the materials will continue to be used after the end of the project.

This project is funded by ENGAGEMENT GLOBAL.
