The school “Future for Children Wacker College” is located in a UNESCO village in Sri Lanka. The island state south of India has been in a civil war for over 20 years. We became aware of the school and its problems through one of our members. Due to the lack of gymnastics and sports equipment, there were no physical education classes at the school. This means that the approximately 200 children do not experience sufficient physical compensation. This can lead to pent-up aggression, which the children take out on their classmates. Sport promotes tolerance, mutual respect and a sense of responsibility, while also reducing the potential for violence.
To support the school in offering sports lessons, we provided equipment such as volleyballs and soccer balls, as well as sports mats to protect the children from injuries. Furthermore, we achieved the donation of two computers of a company based in Hamburg. One computer was made available to the school for bureaucratic purposes. The second computer was provided to the school’s partner training center for building motor vehicles, so that short films on the construction of the engines and on industrial production can be shown to the students.
