Hungerfree in Ramadan - food for families in need in Afghanistan
Your donation enables families in need to have safe meals in Ramadan!
Ramadan is the holiest month of the year and is one of the five pillars of Islam. In addition to daily fasting between sunrise and sunset, charity and donations are among the central duties of this period. Believing Muslims are encouraged to support people in need and give them food – an act that is considered particularly beneficial.
The fasting month of Ramadan is therefore a time of sharing, reflection and solidarity. While many people are able to end their fast together with their families, millions around the world do not know where their next meal will come from. Especially in crisis regions such as Afghanistan, many families are affected by extreme financial poverty and hunger. The heavy snowfall and deaths from the cold in recent weeks have exacerbated the situation and made it clear how essential support is for Afghan households suffering from extreme winter cold and a lack of supplies.
Ramadan Emergency Relief 2026 supports around 122 Afghan families in need in Balkh province. By distributing food packages, over 850 people can spend the holy month of Ramadan with dignity and the security of a daily meal.
OVER 17 MILLION PEOPLE IN AFGHANISTAN ARE STARVING
Afghanistan is facing one of the worst hunger and food supply crises in the world. It is estimated that 42% of the population is acutely affected by food insecurity, while around 4.9 million mothers and children suffer from malnutrition. The situation is particularly dramatic for children: 3.7 million girls and boys under the age of five are malnourished, many of them life-threatening. Women are also severely affected – around 40% of women are malnourished, which has a direct impact on the health of their children, as malnutrition during pregnancy and breastfeeding impairs the growth and development of babies.
Overall, one in five people in Afghanistan live in fear of their next meal. During Ramadan, this plight is exacerbated for many families who do not have enough food to break their fast and are in urgent need of support.

SHOW SOLIDARITY, SAVE LIVES
An important part of Ramadan is iftar, the communal breaking of the fast after sunset. Families, neighbors and friends come together to end the fast in community. For many, this is a moment of gratitude, togetherness and hope.
But while many people in Germany can enjoy iftar with their loved ones, many families in Afghanistan do not know where their next meal will come from. Ramadan reminds us to be there for each other and not to forget those in need.

This emergency response targets the most vulnerable people within the local community in Balkh province.. In particular, this includes internally displaced people, returnees, women-headed households, elderly households and families in extreme financial poverty who suffer from hunger during the holy month of Ramadan and are exposed to the winter cold. We plan to reach over 850 people and provide them with food during Ramadan.

1. Identification of beneficiaries: In cooperation with local partners, families in need are identified who urgently require the packages.
2. Procurement and compilation of the food packages: The packages contain basic foodstuffs and warm blankets.
3. Distribution to families: The packages are distributed at designated distribution points or directly to the families.
4. Monitoring and evaluation: Our local partners document the distribution and collect feedback in order to make future campaigns even more targeted.
